SCHIEDAM, the Netherlands — Huisman will supply two cranes for a VARD 9 15 designed vessel ordered by Toyo Construction for Japan’s offshore wind sector.

The fully electric 250-mt hybrid boom subsea crane and the 100-mt knuckle boom crane will be manufactured at Huisman’s site in Xhangzhou, China.

Features of the subsea crane include the electric traction and storage winch design, said to enable secure storage of large-diameter subsea wire rope, and passive and active heave compensation systems. It will undergo certification according to ClassNK regulations.

The knuckle boom crane, one of Huisman’s recently introduced subsea cranes range for offshore construction vessels, also has active heave compensation and can support subsea work and cargo handling across the deck.

Other features of the two models, according to the company, are:

  • Load curve leads to optimized deck handling and overboarding of high-volume structures such as suction anchors or pinpiles;
  • Ability to lower the knuckle for an improved operational weather window, with reduced motions during offshore lifting operations;
  • Electric-driven subsea winch package lowers power consumption of the crane system; and
  • Hydraulic active and passive heave compensation facilitates precise lowering of loads through the splash zone and accurate landing on the seabed.
